Staying Alive + Trigger Gems + Cast when Damage Taken questions

Hi,

I've just read wiki on CWDT - http://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Cast_when_Damage_Taken.

What happens when i link it like this


Immortal Call goes first?

I'm a first timer on HC league (now playing on beyond). And I'd like to make sure I don't RiP so early with my stash empty.

Having said that, I need to dig all the knowledge about trigger gems. Stuff on surviving is most welcome too.

Is there a comprehensive guide on trigger gems? I'm sure there's interesting stuff on setups.

I didn't know that it only applies to phys dmg, wow, I though I was safe with IC. Does this mean that spell damage, e.g. those dangerous Storm Call from those beyonders, IC won't save me?

Yes, it would go off first, but only the first time it triggers, later on the cooldown on EC (cooldown pauses damage counter on the gem) will screw up the sequence. That's why people usually have two CwDT setups, a low level one with EC and a high level one with IC which lowers the frequency of IC triggers and give it a longer duration.

Right, IC blocks physical damage only, it would work against spells only if they do physical damage like ethereal knives, evangelist blasts and vaal rocks. A nice feature is that it also makes you immune to bleeding, given that it's physical damage over time.
Wish the armchair developers would go back to developing armchairs.

CWDT+ EC + Decoy + Incr Duration
CWS + IC + Frost wall + Molten Shell

but i wonder how long frost wall it's cast speed will be. gonna test it out

I think it's noted in the 1.2.x patch notes that you cannot use the same spell in two triggers (whether they're the same trigger or not). So this double IC setup one doesn't work anymore right?

It's not a double immortal call setup, it's low level enduring cry and high level immortal call.

Cast when stunned isn't a popular gem because most builds are trying to get stunned as little as possible, CwDT is more reliable.
Wish the armchair developers would go back to developing armchairs.

I think the note you're talking about was that gems supported by two trigger gems don't work anymore. There were some silly shenanigans before that linked Cast on Death with a spell and one of the other 'Cast when' gems to get a massive damage boost for free.

I haven't looked at your skill tree, but last time I ran a character that relied on EC and IC to stay alive I opted to hardcast both. If you get extra endurance charge nodes keeping a stack of charges up can give you a huge boost to your tank. I kept Immortal Call around as a panic button, and at high levels it lasts forever. Personal preference just highly favored having access to Immortal Call before Kole punches me, not after. :P

As for Cast when Stunned, you can only be stunned by an attack that hits you for a lot of damage, and CwS isn't a 100% guarantee to fire. Tends to work better with builds that use a high block chance since you can still be stunned when you block without having to take the hit.
