Gear Socket Visibility Is Randomly Changing When Inspecting Gear

When inspecting gear with a controller using R3 (pressing right stick), the visibility of sockets in the gear seem to toggle randomly.

I have disabled "Always Show Sockets" in my General settings. When hovering over a piece of gear and pressing/holding down R3 the socket visibility is toggled randomly. I have not been able to identify a pattern, this seems to just randomly occur when alternating between pressing and holding down R3. So this is either a bug, or not documented in the controls display.
