Different chances for 5 linking 6 and 5 socket chests?

Depends, and Vorici's color crafting is the main factor because it affects gems from the top.

So, I've seen setups where that extra socket is used for a curse or something so it would help a bunch to have that slot go first in case the curse is off-color, like using warlord's mark on a caster setup. It isn't hard getting one red, but it's a bit harder to have that red in a specific slot and also roll other slots the right color.
On the other hand, I once relinked my 1-5 into 5-1 because I needed a lot of off-colors in my main link and getting reds in Carcass isn't easy.

So you're saying if you do the 3 Red recipe, the first 3 sockets starting from top left will be the 3 reds? Learn something new everyday. I never noticed that. But then again I almost never used the recipe. I did this staff manually to get green single socket, only place I could put desecrate. If I 6 link it I would have to use an Unset ring.

it's not like it's incredibly rare, but it is significantly less likely than getting the bottom right unlinked.


on a related note, this is the only unlinked-top-left i've got (although admittedly i really don't try to 5L that often, a lot of my builds get by with 4Ls):
