Breaking down Items = Less traveling back to town
Hey guys,
I've found threads on this topic in the 9.3 forum, but wanted to raise it again. I've been playing the D3 beta for a few months now, and have been jumping back and forth between D3 and POE. And although I've been enjoying being able to sell items as of recent in POE, I still manage to fill up my inventory full of items, and now need to make frequent travels back to town. Which can be a pain in the a** if you don't have many portal scrolls. My thinking is why dont POE have a feature of being able to break down items for orb fragments or whatnot. There could be a penalty for breaking them down, like you aren't rewarded as much as when you go to town. I've found in D3 that it's much nicer to break things down while in the world, and getting back to the action faster. Breaking down = less inventory space & getting back to the action faster I love lamp

" D3 will get a confirmation box added because of the whining that some people will make when they dismantle important items by accident. I could be missinformed, if thats the case please enlight me. For future reference you could ask players of Hellgate how it turned out ? Auto-dismantler, leaving all white/blue/yellow items directly into the recycle-bin. Only accepting Uniqes as a relative worthy drop. But that creates another Question: Why do white and blue items even dropp? (And yes, i know these are seperate games, but the dismantling sounds similar) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=drDs-Y5DNH8

In Hellgate London we had a program that autodismantled everything up to a certain rarity. I set it to dismantle everything white and blue. Keeping only the rares.
Without that program, people had to pay for it to do automatically. It was such a pain in the ass to stop killing, open inventory and manually dismantle every single items. It was a bad design. The way to do it, is to set a very complex filter, like auction house filters works, and allow people to do it automatically. So minimum time is wasted. But they wont do it here. Because its not an original solution, it would take too much effort and the main thing: their design is not to make it easy for people to farm and acquire value. All the hassle has the purpose of slowing people down. Its intentional. "It feels like holding my breath under water constantly." Me about the limited "life expectancy" of the inventory space on Path of Exile and frequent needs to go to town to unload. Última edição por Interesting#4599 em 31 de dez. de 2011 13:16:49

The real problem with Hellgate's dismantle feature wasn't having to stop killing to do it. It was the ridiculous amount of time it took to dismantle each item. A minimum of 4 actions per item (click, move mouse, release button, click) with delays between them was just too much. They made it slightly better in Mythos by adding the crafting hammer, but you still had 2 actions per item.
I doubt we'll get a dismantle feature in PoE. There are no crafting materials, and breaking down a piece of leather armor can't produce an orb. When you craft in other games, you're physically turning materials into an item. When you use orbs, you're transferring magical properties to the item, consuming/destroying the orb in the process. You can't take off your boot and tear it apart to find an Alteration Shard. Closed Beta/Alpha Tester back after a 10-year hiatus. First in the credits! An auto dismantling function like it was in Hellgate would be nice indeed, i understand Interesting's opinion about this, but generally ppl want a comfortable game to play, and traveling back to town every half min could be a bit frustrating.

I doubt this will be added to the game. The time and hassle of going back to town to sell items is intended to force players to make decisions about which items are worth picking up to sell. For this reason the selling system can be balanced under the assumption that players won't be selling every last item they find and the rewards for individual items can be higher as a result. With the sort of dismantling system you're talking about, players would be able to 'sell' every single item that drops and the rewards would have to balanced to this. My guess is that rewards gained through auto-dismantling would need to be ~1/10 of those gained through the current selling system.
