What is your goal for PoE?

I'd like to share my ultimate goal for PoE, because it know it's different than the reasons a lot of people have for playing.

Ever since my first character hit the end of Merciless, I realized just how many skills and ways to play the game there are. Then there are different ways of playing the same skill as well. A capped block melee character players very different from a ranged low lifer, but both can survive just fine with a solid understanding of what the dangers are. Builds can be designed not only to use different skills, but which create a different tempo when playing. As a snapshotting summoner, you can make profitable item farming nearly mindless by casting high level Enfeeble and doing absolutely nothing else, and I loved doing that for too many hours to count.

This brings me back to the topic at hand. Why I play PoE, is that I want to be able to farm high level content with all of the variety of builds and playstyles that are possible to do in the game, at their highest level of effectiveness. I want to have viable builds that can farm level 78 maps based around every skill gem and weapon type. Further, I want all of these characters to reach the absolute highest pinnacle of gear that the game allows. You can see why I play in standard, and love doing so. It's the only place where this is possible. The fact that legacy items exist just gives me more cool and rare things to strive for, and I love collecting them.

I've been working towards this goal since the end of open beta. Thus far, my greatest treasures are a mirror worthy two handed sword and a Demigod's Presence. The Presence isn't very useful in endgame but it was great to hold as a goal because there aren't very many and the size affix is the rarest of the rare. I'm about 20 successful high level builds in, and I think I have about 10-15 more to go, even if they stopped adding new skills. Each time I add something really nice to my collection, I usually have several builds that can benefit from it, so collecting all manner of powerful items is continually satisfying.

Mostly, I want the freedom to select a build whose tempo suits my mood at any point, to be able to have it up and running within minutes. Do I want to play Ground Slam today? Ethereal Knives? Totems? Minions? There's almost always something I'm in the mood to use to wreck the monsters and rogues of Wraeclast. I could never do this if I just had one high level character and had to respec him.

This is what motivates me to login each day, start new builds and grind a few more levels on the builds I already have. If I one day actually achieve the goal of having mirrored items for every single skill, maybe then I'll race or something or play a temporary league. For now, Standard or bust.

What motivates you to play?

I want to get to 100, and get my armor 5 linked.
Get one of each character through merciless in HC solo/self-found.
So I can save money from playing all other games... so far it is kinda working.

One of those is achievable for the average gamer.

I've always wanted a truly epic character with great gear and the ability to solo everything. I achieved that this league and after more than a year of playing I feel close to done with PoE for a while. My cyclone Mara will be a trophy I never dismember and I'll continue to play like crazy till the end of this league.

My gear btw:

Honestly my only goal in PoE is to just enjoy my time with my characters killing hordes of mobs in a manner I find fun, which right now is a crit arc/vaal storm call witch.
Killing Dominus mercyless solo on HC selffound
I've reached my goal yesterday

No that wasn't my goal really, I just wanted to reach this "milestone" for a long time now, not only with Path of Exile, firstly with Dungeon Defenders, Than Team Fortress 2 and than Starbound, non of it quite worked out tho, PoE is the winner.
I'd like to get to level 100 someday probably, for that you need a really capable character, just can't afford dying after level 98 or so.

My goal is to finish Merciless for once.

The never-ending story.
