V 3.18 (Updated 5/13/22)
3.18 Changes: PoB: https://pastebin.com/sQeJSQ22

Some changes to the endgame trees as it is pretty easy to get 100% spell suppression at that point. Also, I've added more clusters to the cluster tree to maximize DPS. It's still a great build, just so not Meta.

For HC, roll determination and grace. Take the DPS hit and keep the tank. I have a SSFHC tree in the game. If anybody wants trade league HC trees, I can slap one together as needed.

Below here is old information.... much of it is still viable and valuable, but not all

======================================================================================
What should you expect from this build?

The build is a TANK.

It is SSF, HC, and League Start capable.

It utilizes the Champion ascendancy to gain permanent Fortify, the Winddancer passive for a straight 20% damage reduction, Steelskin for a little off the top, Withering Step for elusive, and evasion and dodge to make most things miss. Add in 100% elemental ailment aviodance and self cast enduring cry for extra regen.

With flasks up, you basically do not get hit, and when you do, the built in defenses limit the damage to almost never get one shot. Getting back to full life before the next hit is easy.

For skills we use TR Ballista Totems and a selfcast TR on our Chest for QoL and additional dmg output.

The beauty of this build is not the pure dmg output, but rather the consistent damage that can be applied while never actually targeting an enemy. You quickly cast your totems and then focus on evading attacks and keeping defenses up. With good gear you can get ~1 MM DoT DPS per totem (x5), plus another 1-2 MM you can directly apply on top of that. With very good gear you can reach 1.5 MM DoT DPS per totem or more.
======================================================================================
1) PROS
Spoiler

+SSF viable
+HC viable
+League starter
+run and gun, stuff dies behind you
+Consistent damage without direct attacks
+Tanky enough for the Gauntlet
+Should be able to clear all content (UE down deathless in <3 minutes at level 90 in standard)
+Most map mods are no problem
+No uniques required

======================================================================================
2) CONS
Spoiler

-Totem delay (you can selfcast TR in maps should you prefer)
-Needs 111 Int and 109 Str (155 str for a fully leveled enduring cry)
-Self cast enduring cry
-TR based so expensive to min/max
-Will not oneshot bosses
-Avoid Cannot Regen Life and Mana Maps
-Requires prioritizing Mana. Use an enduring flask, gems, and tree passives accordingly.

======================================================================================
3) Skill Tree Progression / Path of Building / Ascendancy / Bandits
Spoiler
Path of building:https://pastebin.com/bkdZA9eg

Leveling trees are in the POB.

Use Clarity early until you get an enduring Mana Flask

Grab two caustic arrows and pierce, slot the second with a Ballista totem, and then mirage archer when available. When TR is available at ~lvl 12, grab two and stick one in a selfcast with Lifetap and one with Ballista Totem. Grab Vicious projectiles for both when available in act 2, and go from there. Rush Bravery, Avatar of the Hunt, and then the Winddancer area. The Freedom of Movement wheel is used for the convenience of the added movement speed. You can either skip running the first lab until you are ready to run the second one as well or choose Conquerer and respec (10 respec points needed). I recommend choosing Conquerer and respeccing for HC players. Follow the PoB leveling tree from there. A 4-link for each TR can carry you through the acts, and a 5-link rolls maps all the way up through yellows.

Old but good: If you are new to TR, or want more theory so you can understand/challenge some of my choices, either search for Remi's build or give this pretty expansive guide a read. It is quite good: https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/3078555/page/1

Ascendancy:Unstoppable Hero, Fortitude, Inspirational, then First to Stike/Last to Fall or Conquerer

Bandits: Kill All

For Selfcast: Toxic Rain - Lifetap - Vicious Projectiles - Mirage Archer
--------------
Leveling Uniques for those with access to them:

Bows: Quill Rain. A six Link Quill Rain can take you well into endgame if you so choose

Quiver: Skirmish

For all other gear, focus on resistances, attack speed, and DoT/DoT Multiwhere applicable.

5) My Actual Gear / End-Game Skills
Spoiler

Uber Lab enchant: Toxic Rain deals 40% increased Damage or Toxic Rain fires one additional arrow.

Really Good Gear:
Spoiler

BOW:
This bow is no longer possible as of 3.15 as of the DoT Multi being moved to a Suffix. As a result, it is easier to craft a really good bow and will probably be harder to craft an amazing bow.

QUIVER:

CHEST:
BIS is a +1 skill gem and/or Attacks have -15 Mana chest. They are both Warlord Mods. There is an example of a very good craftable chest in the PoB.

HELMET:
BiS is now ilvl 85 Hunter Lion Pelt with nearby monsters have -9% chaos resistance.

BOOTS:
Lvl 81+ Shaper Boots for 31-35% Elemental Ailment Avoidance.

AMULET:
Lvl 82+ Hunter Amulet with +1 to Chaos Gems or +1 to Dexterity Gems.

RINGS: One Lvl 75/80 Hunter Ring for Despair on hit

OTHER:

My old SSFHC Gear - Purely for information

Update with SSFHC GEAR

GEMS
Spoiler

TR Ballista 6L ON BOW: Toxic Rain - Ballista Totem - (A) Viscious Projectiles - (A) Swift Affliction - Empower or Efficacy - Concentrated Effect

TR selfcast 6L ON CHEST: 3 options

1. My Preferred is (Both DPS and QoL): Toxic Rain - Vicious Projectiles - Swift Affliction - Mirage Archer - Withering Touch - Life Gain on Hit

2. Damage: Toxic Rain - Vicious Projectiles - Swift Affliction - Mirage Archer - Withering Touch - Efficacy

3. Pure QoL: Blast Rain or TR or Frenzy - Mirage Archer - Withering Touch - Hextouch - Despair - Increased Duration or Life Gain on Hit

CWDT - Steelskin

Enduring Cry - Urgent Orders

Movement Skill of Choice

Enlighten - Malevolence - Vaal Grace - Vaal Clarity or Vitality or Flesh and Stone or Arctic Armor

The following single gems stick in wherever you can:
Blood Rage
Despair (until you get a Despair on Hit Ring)
Defiance Banner (once you get Ispiration)
Withering Step (Bind this to left click so it auto-casts as you run around)

JEWELS
Spoiler

Prioritize Life, Attack Speed, and DOT Multi

I also recommend you get anything with Corrupted Blood for endgame.

Unique Jewels to keep an eye out for:

1. Watcher’s Eye - Mods to look for: Malevolance = XX% DOT Multi, Vitality = Life gained on hit, Clarity = Non-channeling Skills have -X to mana cost, Grace = Evasion

2. Replica Conqueror's Efficiency for mana woe's

Cluster's can offer some great quality of life. There are good examples of possible clusters in the PoB including a large Chaos Damage Cluster, Medium Chaos DoT Cluster, Medium Totem Cluster, Small Life Cluster, and Small Evasion Cluster. If you are able to go clusters, it can get really expensive but it allows for:
- Hindering and Slowing enemies
- Perma onslaught via totem jewel (Switch out Silver Flask for Sulpher(Offense))
- Extra life regen
- Extra Mana regen

BOW CRAFTING:
Spoiler
Use a 3-socket resonator socketed with a Metallic Fossil, Prismatic Fossil, and Corroded Fossil. It usually takes just a few times to hit +3, but you may want to reroll a couple times to get a secondary mod that's helpful. Both Attack Speed and DoT Multi are useful mods, everything else is secondary or useless.

======================================================================================
6) Flasks
Spoiler

No unique flasks as of 3.15

Enduring Mana flasks is mandatory due to mana changes

======================================================================================
7) Pantheon Gods
Spoiler

Major: Solaris (Bossing) or Lunaris (Mapping)
Minor: Garukhan or Ryslatha

You can really choose your preference for Pantheon. I often switch it around based on what I'm doing.

======================================================================================
8) Hardcore Viable or not?
Spoiler

YES! Gauntlet SSF/HC Viable.

======================================================================================
9) You're rich
Spoiler

Awakened gems
Watcher’s Eye
Big Money Toxic Rain Bow
Expensive Clusters to play with
Lvl 4 Empower
Thread of Hope w/ Very Large Ring
Replica Conqueror's Efficiency

FAQ
1) Why Toxic Rain with Ballista?
Spoiler

Toxic Rain lays down a really nice layer of damage, hinders/slows enemies, scales well in the endgame, and does not require any uniques. TR is traditionally a good all-arounder. Decent mapping speed with good bossing ability.

2) Why don't I just play a straight Toxic Rain build?
Spoiler

This is a tank that utilizes TR to do good consistent damage. Straight Toxic Rain is really all about the damage. I chose this build for the Ritual Guantlet and it performed admirably.

3) How cheap is this build?
Spoiler

This build is SSF viable which means you can make it work with less than amazing gear. Therefore, it's cheap. However, TR is not necessarily cheap to scale fully into endgame in a trade league. Your one big expense is the bow. Beyond that, it's just how much do you want to spend to min/max?

4) What auras should I run? Why Flesh and Stone?
Spoiler

I recommend Malevolence, Flesh&Stone, and Defiance Banner (new as of 3.15). If you don't want to run Flesh and Stone, then a mix of Vitality, Clarity, and Aspect of the Spider are all great options.

5) Can I drop some defenses?
Spoiler

Depending on league, dropping defense to add offense is totally feasible. The POB mainly focuses on making a super tanky HC viable build.

6) Should I get more life?
Spoiler

Are you playing HC? If yes, then do what feels right. If playing SC, nope.

7) Elemental Avoidance at 100%?
Spoiler
Our passive tree automatically gives us (20%). Shaper Boots for (31-35%) Elemental Ailment Avoidance. Elemental avoidance can also be crafted (up to 25%) on helmet or gloves. If you need more, there are other passives accessible to the tree or Cluster Jewels with the Elegant Form Mod (15% + 3% attack and spell dodge)

8) How to deal with mana as of 3.15?
Spoiler
Good question! This is a work in progress. I think it will require an enduring mana flask or a lot of investment into mana mitigating gear. It's not insurmountable, but it is now harder. I'll add more after leaguestart and some testing.

9) How to get the most overlapping pods?
Spoiler
Per Remi: "If you looked into my spreadsheet of tests,
you can see that on a specific one, it has ~5.29 overlaps. It can be obtained via either 15% anomalous concentrated effect with 0% Inc. AoE, or 20% anomalous concentrated effect with 5% Inc. AoE.
39% AOE is also good. One way of getting it is 20% from bow mastery, 9-10% AoE on glove, 9-10% quality on Toxic rain gem.

10) How is this better/different than other TR Champs... Lightee's?
Spoiler
It's more different than better. It's a preferred playstyle. Lightee made one that is mainly a selfcast TR build that utilizes totems to help when bossing. The Toxic Tank leads with totems and uses selfcast as a additional dps provider and QoL setup as needed. More freedom of movement and more stable passive dps output.

Nice build. Might try it for 3.14.

Have you done awakener 8 or 9 with this build?
Hey LegionFirex, Thank you and I hope you do. I'm looking forward to patch notes and will continue to craft the build a bit for next week.

Regarding killing A8, I have not as I do not have access to the awakener in standard. I might get it done depending on time and will post a video if I do. Just knowing how the build felt against UE, I'm very optimistic. It might wait until next league.

Hi. One personal question. Im looking for a tanky build for next league but Im not good at builds that need flasks to survive. Could I play this build without flasks and keep the tankiness?

It’s still tanky, but you will get hit more. This build does give you stun avoidance so you’ll still be able to move away after taking a hit. I’d suggest taking the three phasing passives next to winddancer in order to keep up phasing. A key factor in survivability is movement, and if you’re phasing and avoiding stuns you can move away from danger in order to give yourself time to heal up.

Patiently waiting patchnotes... TR nerf? Let us see.

Hopefully it's not too bad, this build looks like a ton of fun.
I love totems, i love dot damage and i love duelist, this build is for me. If the TR nerf is not too strong then I already have a starter for this league.
Looking forward for your updates friend. Ty for the guide

Anything less than a straight nuclear bomb may benefit this build. I think a nuclear bomb can be defined as anything more than a 15-20% dps nerf. My reasoning:

1. People bailing on TR should make gear less expensive in trade league.
2. The build is not as DPS dependent as normal TR due to its survivability
3. Low life status starting at 50% may make First to Strike an extremely powerful ascendancy passive
4. I'm interested in Lifetap's potential

Even if I have to rework it a little, I think this should still be a strong league starter. We'll see though... till tomorrow!
