Unironicaly I think d3/d4 should be rated highly for two reasons. They don't overstay their welcome and their multiplayer actually works.

Torchlight also deserves a lot of credit for things just working.

Not every game needs to be a grindfest.

Torchlight "works" but it's not exactly exciting. And lets not talk about the fiasco that was TL3

Wonder when the 'Thank You, our finale of Last Epoch' announcement coming. It just feels still like a beta.
What's with all this hate against Last Epoch? How much has it changed since the early beta days a few years ago?

I played a lot I think around 0.8? it was a good game. Itemization and crafting was top notch and easy, story was pretty decent. Skills felt good to play. Endgame wasn't fully fleshed out at the time, but I still had fun tackling all the bosses and pushing the corruption levels.

What in the world changed?
It didnt stick the landing. It's really that simple.

Technically neither did PoE 1 (several key features we were expecting never eventuated) but PoE 1 didn't have the same competition that LE faces. And PoE 1 was more than strong enough to brute force its way into years of content and updates.

PoE1 was the little engine that could so did.

LE is the little engine that could but didn't.

Grim Dawn is the little engine that did. Twice.

Warhammer Inquisitor Martyr is the little engine that warped.

And Wolcen was the little engine that just couldn't, no matter how hard it tried.

And between DIV and PoE 2 both being anything but indie, I doubt we will see the likes of any sort of little engines in the future of ARPGs. Even TQ2 has the weight of THQ Nordic behind it.

Kind of a shame really. Little engines dream big. Big engines just do the job. If we are lucky.

The answer to the question "how much has it changed?" is: not enough. People put high expectations into the project and the devs happily nodded along saying that is also their goal, and when those expectations weren't met a lot of people (myself included) were disillusioned.

This kind of negativity can only come from people who were on board at some point I think. We have a meme going between friends every time LE pushes out some small update where we ask "LE gud now?" and then someone says "LE still dog" and we move on with our days...

Got it....so it sort of fell into the D3 beginning stages "trap". Not the AH crap, but the fact that the game was released without many of the things promised or even shown in earlier gameplay clips.

Shame, it was being developed for such a long time for it to fall short like that. Eventually I'll play through it again to form my own opinion, just surprised because the LOVE for LE was huge barely 3 years ago.
They blew a lot of the hype early on. There's such a thing as showing your product too much after all

Then it'll be the little engine that did it thrice!

I hope crate can refind the magic that made TQ so damn good, because it was missing from Grim Yawn for me. And that's even after I mucked about with mods.

Gotta wonder how Crate feel about Nordic's sequel to their original game...

That is a good summary. Grim Dawn feels sooo slow I still don't understand why people liked it.....
