My first Action RPG game, any rules of thumb?

A perfect build (- one that suits your play style) can only be achieved by making mistakes - lots of 'em.

I have to agree with the D3 thing in world chat, kinda annoying at times.

Definitely no referring to D3 once you reach merciless. We will mercilessly put you on our ignore lists and you can't party up and farm etc :)
POE is a constantly evolving game, so expect balance changes, buffs and nerfs STILL!

and being his first ARPG prepare to die a lot while killing things and acquiring loot. Also don't get discouraged if you find your character is built horribly bad and gets stuck and you have to make a new one. It will happen. It happens to us all. I dont know how many times i had to re roll in D2 because my build that worked just fine in lower difficulties wasn't worth a crap in higher ones. Its all about trial and error, theory crafting and so on. Also loot hunting and slaying monster is always more fun with a buddy!
PoE is my 1st ARPG, never played any Diablo, Titan quest or Torchligh. I come from mmorpgs like Lineage II.

What i did for now while tottaly confuse about skills/gear:
Almost every day i make mistakes, my skill tree is a complety mess, my gear dont make any sense and i never know if a new weapon is better then what i have.

But this is the fun part: discovering the game and its nice been yet in Beta.

When i really mess up with passives, i start another char and try diferent path, maybe this is why i didnt get futher then lvl 34 :)

My noob advices:
- Play a little with passive skills tree on this site
- Try 1st one of the main attributes class: marauder(str), ranger(dex) or witch (int) befor the other 3 hybrids.
- read a little about the class on this forum.
- Dont fear to try "crazy" things with passive skills, this is beta.
- most of all: have fun grinding ;)
Here is a few game play tips that will really extend to any ARPG but also POE

- don't get surrounded - this is the fastest way to die, if you find yourself getting overwhelmed just back track a bit until they are all in front of you and gun them down.

- Open every chest, barrel, crate and kick every corpse - you never know what you will find

- Read the mouseover tool tips. They actually tell you a lot

- Try to equip one AoE spell and one single target spell

- Don't be afraid to try hardcore! The reward is so much better when the risk is "permadeath". POE HC is not as unforgiving as some, your HC char will be moved to default league if you die so you don't really lose anything.

- Play around in the passive skill tree http://www.pathofexile.com/passive-skill-tree/

- roll every class and play to the Mud Flats at least once.

- hold down Shift while you are attacking to stand in place

Hold down shift while moving to stop and use your LMB skill. Very useful for mellee characters.
Make sure your happy with you key bindings. When I played I switched the abilities to the number keys cause that's what I was used to from other games. It made the game much easier for me.
I also don't think he has to try other arpg "classic" before PoE. Why not starting with the best of the genre immediately, otherwise maybe he would end up disliking the genre.

My first and only other arpg was Phantasy Star Online on GameCube (awesome game). I didn't know it was an arpg at that time, but it's definitely one.

I haven't got any issue as beginner of PoE, the biggest difficulty was to understand the mechanics that are not explained, fortunately there is a thread for that. So my only advice would be to read this thread.

^ this.

And find one or two helpful people to ask questions of while playing.

Shoot me a whisper, always happy to help

Yeah, I never said 'had to', just recommended it. I have done so with people in-game in the past to some success, but as ever, everyone's different, YMMV and other such things.

Whether or not TQ or TL1 are 'inferior' is not really the point -- they're both games many of us have played first and helped us form a strong idea of what an ARPG should be. I really can't recommend going back to D2 simply because that game *is* inferior to Path of Exile by virtue of the fact that PoE has worked so hard to outdo it. TQ, TL1, the earlier Dungeon Siege games, they exist more as a parallel to PoE rather than a clear predecessor to me.

And they're *all* far more polished than PoE in its current state.

So my recommendation was not at all about 'which game is better', but which game would help a newcomer to the ARPG scene ease into the things we veterans take for granted.

My girlfriend's first ARPG was PoE and she does fine. I cannot, however, presume the same of others (partly because they don't have to put up with me and my impossibly high standards ^_^).

Just my way of clarifying the recommendation to play older, complete ARPGs with more standard features. No 'has to' at all -- but it wouldn't hurt.
If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.

I am Path of Exile's biggest whale. Period.
