Path of Exile, Diablo 3, or Torchlight?
Tried the TL2 beta, somehow it just didn't grab me the way TL1 did. Maybe because I hadn't played a decent ARPG in a long time before TL1, or because TL1 was a little more focused, idk. But TL2 didn't feel that good to me. I'll still get it because it's $20 and it's the only one with offline, but not as excited as I was.
Path of Exile I like a lot. It's very solid and has a nice understated story/atmosphere to it. I'm glad I found it and have enjoyed the beta a little too much, cutting myself off for now so I don't feel terrible when all my chars get wiped. Wish I could do the Diamond pack. Diablo 3 I also like. I find a lot of the complaints frankly nonsensical - for example the guy above complaining about getting tiny amounts of bonus XP for breaking a lot of barrels quickly. Like...so what? It's fun. And it's that way with a lot of the complaints. Frankly I'm glad they didn't make Diablo 2.5 after 12 years, and anyway GGG has pretty much made D2.5 for us here (although, when I actually think about it, I struggle to name any game systems that are very similar between D2 and PoE). Variety is good. I do think it's interesting to note that none of the three games has retained traditional skill trees. Seems pretty clear those failed in a major way, and each game has its own solution. D3: all skills available, respec anything whenever you want, punished for respeccing during a game session at end game. TL2: sort of refined trees without many prereqs and with stiffer level reqs, freely respec up to level 10, apparently they still have big changes coming. PoE: find skills as drops, respec skills whenever you want, no punishment for respeccing skills, but only limited passive respecs. Última edição por karoc#5526 em 3 de jun. de 2012 09:18:22

My first post on these forums.
Personally I joined yesterday and that was after I finally had enough with Diablo 3. It does not resemble the fundamentals of Diablo 2 except its title and lore. Speaking of lore, and story-telling for that matter, it is absolutely horrendous in Diablo 3. However, the most fundamental flaws Diablo 3 has that made me quit the game was the lack of creativity behind the itemization, the way statistics and skills are allocated, and finally the general atmosphere along with its various soundtracks. As regards to gameplay, I do enjoy the fluid and dynamic combat but it came at a cost. That cost was the way skills are received in Diablo 3. Although convenient at first, once you look at it from a long-term perspective you will realize that a skill system that follows a "tree" build such as Path of Exiles or Diablo 2 promotes the incentive to replay classes and experiment. That experimentation alone provides you with months of additional gameplay. A complex skill system in conjunction with varying affixes on items gives you alot of reasons to keep playing. This core part is what made Diablo 2 last so long, and although the PvP system was a bit messy it kept the community alive and kicking. The fact that Path of Exiles extends that idea with leagues is fantastic, and I feel this game is superior to Diablo 3 in atmosphere, music, gameplay and captures the ARPG genre very well. This is the reason why I'm here, why I paid 10 bucks and will do so again so my friend can play. Última edição por Zeltak#4159 em 3 de jun. de 2012 11:09:52

"I agree with most of what you said. And for me the Auction House really hurt Diablo. The whole reason i played diablo was to build my characters from ground up, finding and trading items with the community etc... Now, the drop rate is set so very low that you are prtactically forced to use the AH to BUY you character to progress in the game. I played D3 for nearly 100h and didn't get 1 leg or set item...NOT 1. Oh...but i could buy them from the AH. Needless to say i pretty much quit playing. Very disappointed in that game. |

My initial response is PoE because of the dark, brooding environment. D3 looks like it's ok on the atmosphere, but Torchlight is just too cartoonish for my liking.

Yes, I love the darkness of P of E most of all.

D3 was a terrible disappointment for me. It looks nice but it's full of bugs, lags, serverissues and most of all: The entire game is created for the sole purpose of ripping of the money of the players in the RMAH.
The Dropp-Rate is terrible and after playing ~200 hours I have found one (1) legendary and it was shit. You have to go to the AH every 5 levels in the higher content to be able to have fun playing. And it will - I think - get worse when the RMAH is available. Torchlight sure looks nice and the price is really cool. I will test it. Maybe this will be the true D3. PoE looks really like a good game. Can't say much, but after what I see in YT-Videos and Streams, it could really work out and offer a lot of fun. A BETA-Key would be so nice.

Bought D3, played it for a couple weeks, got bored. It's just awfully bland. No templates to explore and try out, shitty drops, everything boils down to farming gold to buy an increase in the few stats that matter (DPS mainly).
POE is interesting. There are some unusual concepts, The graphics feel a bit like a modern Diablo I. ATM, I feel there may be a lack of skills (the active, gem ones) but it's a Beta... I've already preordered TL2, so I'll be trying that too. Dunno what I'll prefer. I'm not a fan of TL's graphics but that's not my primary concern. And i'll certainly play Grim Dawn too. I still have Titan Quest installed on by PC. But it won't be out before a good while. Will try out the Beta and probably Alpha (Got access through KS) From my POV, it's too early to make a choice between the last 3. Assuming I actually choose :) As for D3... I can't find any motivation to play it further. |

D3 was not how I tought it was gonna be.
I didnt get the same feeling that I got from D2. Its not a bad game. I just had hoped for more. POE looks like its just the game for me to get that same feeling back |

Depends on what you want from the game :) Diablo 3 is good if you're willing to spend a lot of money and have a lot of patience, whereas Torchlight is just damn fun! I'll have a comment for Path of Exile when I have a proper play through :)

" Mighty fine first post. Welcome to the forum, Exile. Try not to get too addicted to the PoE boards: they're almost a meta-game unto themselves...;) And they said *I* was bad at PoE. At least I made it out of act 1 and know how to use the /dnd function. El oh fucking el.
I am Path of Exile's biggest whale. Period. |
