Removing "Filter White Items"
I believe you should still allow it for an option for those of us that want to have magic and above visible, and check white items by holding down ALT.
I want all items showing, but not all items including whites, otherwise my whole screen is nothing but item names. I think it would be a massive mistake to remove this feature. If you must, add a warning to players who choose to filter items, informing them of the value of white items. "Danger is like jello, there's always room for more."

Sounds good.
I always felt that the "hide plain items" in ARPGs was kind of a cop out. It's like a patch instead of a rethinking of the root problem. It's just weird that the game drops items and then you enable an option to filter out some of the drops. Just never made any sense to me. And I agree with your reasoning. Yesterday I thought how cool it is that in PoE white items also have value. With that said I think there is a small issue where itemlevel is concerned: it's nice to keep white items, but if I do, I might not remember when it was first obtained. At the moment the solution is to use /itemlevel. I wonder if this couldn't be part of the item description somehow? (but I must admit I am only making assumption on how itemlevel worked in Diablo and affected the pool of available mods, I'm not sure how it works here). |

An alternative option to make more people could be like this:
Display always all items but in a smaller font, or maybe with truncated names eg . base item and colour only. And when the user presses the toggle key, the item names are selectable and displayed as per default. So you always see what's there, but you can make them non selectable and less "cluttering". Just a random "my 2 cents" idea. Might not work at all :) |

I disagree with this idea. I still think it is a useful feature from time to time. I think instead of removing it, improve it as others mentioned. Allow us to filter white items by quality, sockets, and level. That way it still removes the trash but keeps the good whites.
But even as it is currently it is useful for Normal when you have a bunch of gear already made for your alts. You dont need to see those white items because they are not going to be better then the hand me downs from your high level characters. |

I like having all items shown with the white filter on just for the extra heads up when a magic item or currency item drops.
Having all items showing all the time just the makes the screen an ugly mess in many cases, so removing the white filter option would make the always highlight option very unpleasing to use. The white items show up anyway when I press Alt to actually pick stuff up , so its not as if they are being completely forgotten about. |

I'm all for removing this redundant feature.
However I'd like it to be replaced by something more customizable. Combinable filters on: - sockets So you still see 6 socket items - connected sockets So you still see 5l/6l items - connected socket configuration So you still see chromatic-ables. - rarity So uniques can always be seen. - item size(inventory slots consumed), For rare stashers to filter out 4x2's. - item base type level, So you can see high level whites for crafting. - item modifier max level (/itemLevel) Not that important, but extreme end-game it'd be handy for distinguishing between lvl62,61 & 60 drops. Well, if it is just an option, I think some people will always be mad if it's taken away from them.
Maybe you can just put "(not recommended)" behind the box in the option menu and explain the problem briefly in the mouse over info. But I have to admit, I will never use this option anyway, especially not the one suggested by the last poster that automatically filters them. I either make the effort of looking through them manually or I don't get the reward of discovering awesome normal armor. Automatic detection of awesome loot isn't something I want in this game. " This guys knows what he is talking about. Its not about forcing people to be aware. The current incentives are not worth it. I know the values of everything based on rares. I know the average time to get a rare based my rarity/quantity %. I know exactly what my in-game time is worth. Just like a game with gold, because I managed to find the minimum common denominator of value and time. I dont "get aware" of whites, unless its efficient or rewarding to do so. With the current design, its a game where you Blitz through enemies ignoring everything that is not yellow or orange and you go far, and faster than everyone else by doing that. Because inventory issues, because filter issues, because drop rate issues, because recipes and values issues. You gotta understand that players will ignore something that is not efficient or rewarding. "Being aware" is neither. Because efficiency and reward is relative in a world with infinite enemies and looting spawning out of thin air. How do you make us stop? How do you make us care? Its not removing white filters. I will tell you: by making it as efficient or rewarding as keeping with the grind. Example: town hub with tavern area where non afk time spent there socializing gives bonuses to xp/drops/health/mana/etc for the time spent there. With all the net of systems affecting players, the current decision to remove white filters will not cause the intended effect mentioned on the OP. "It feels like holding my breath under water constantly." Me about the limited "life expectancy" of the inventory space on Path of Exile and frequent needs to go to town to unload.

I couldn't get it to work at all last night. After turning it off for a moment, I couldn't turn it back on. Was a bit confused by it. I would prefer to leave it on, but I do understand that new people will need to be able to access white items easily.
I'm okay with removing it from the options menu. I think it would be nice for experienced games to have access to a command that's not in the menu to allow us to turn it off though... "I would have listened... I would have understood!" - Scion

I always keep an eye out for white items, specifically those with good slot combinations.
Those are the best items for modding. "the premier Action RPG for hardcore gamers."
